KANCHENJUNGA TREK – WORLD’S MOST ADVENTUROUS TREKKING TOUR

Sikkim is home to the third highest mountain in the world which features in many Sikkim trekking tours. In fact, the name of the mountain itself means ‘The five treasures of Snows’ which is in reference to its five peaks. This mountain with an elevation of 8,586 meters is also considered very sacred by the locals.

One of the most popular Kanchenjunga treks is the trekking trail from Yuksom to the Goecha La pass which lies at a high altitude of 4990 meters. This trek is a challenging one but is worth the effort because of the lovely vegetation and natural beauty that can be seen only in this part of the world. Subtropical forests, bright rhododendron flowers, lush green meadows with huge yaks grazing and high valleys are the reward on this Sikkim Kanchenjunga trekking trail.

The journey begins with a 7 hour drive from Darjeeling to Yuksom from where the Kanchenjunga trek actually begins. On the way from Yuksom to Tshokha, trekkers leave the valley behind and pass by the Ratong Chi river. After crossing over four bridges and passing through lush forests of magnolia and rhododendron, trekkers finally reach Tshokha.

The next stop is Dzongri and trekkers pass through the Tshokha village and more rhododendron forests in order to reach the Phedang alp which lies at an elevation of 3650 meters. From here till trekkers reach the Dzongri summit, the view comprising of mountains like Kabru, Ratong and Kanchenjunga can be seen clearly. In fact, the Singalila Ridge which acts as a natural demarcation between Sikkim and Nepal is also visible.

From Dzongri, the trail again enters the valley and involves crossing the Prek Chu river by climbing over a bridge. From here, it takes another hour to reach Thangsing which is located on the slopes of Mount Pandim at an elevation of 3800 meters. From Thangsing, trekkers pass through green meadows and finally reach Onglathang. After passing through tricky glacial moraines, trekkers reach the mesmerizing Lake Samiti from where the actual climb to Goecha La begins.

The journey from Samiti Lake to the Goecha La which lies at an elevation of 5002 meters takes around 7 hours. The steep ascent passes through a dry lake at Zemathang and involves climbing over rocks which rise above 400 meters in height. Once trekkers overcome this pass, they will reach the Talung Valley which offers an astonishing view.

From here, trekkers head back to the Samiti Lake from where they descend to Thangsing, Tshokha , Yuksom and then Darjeeling. Most Sikkim trekking tours take a minimum of 10 days to complete. The best time for Sikkim Kanchenjunga trekking is between June to September and October to mid November.

DRIVING THROUGH BEAUTIFUL SOUTHERN ITALY

There are many fun adventures waiting in Southern Italy. Some of the best ruins of ancient Greek history can be found in this area, with some of them as old as the 11th century BC. Southern Italy is best known for these magnificent structures, archaeological museums and spectacular landscapes. While there is an endless amount of things to see and do while visiting this area of the country, the following activities and sights are some of the most popular.
Take a Tour in Sicily:

There are many fabulous tours available in Sicily, and one of the best is a luxury tour of Palermo. This tour will give visitors the opportunity to view many of the city’s most aristocratic homes, and is perfect for people who want to experience the rich culture of the country. This is the best way to view the magnificent architecture dating from the Middle Ages to the Baroque era, offering guests a vacation they will remember for a lifetime.

Most of these tours are day-long excursions, stopping for lunch and allowing guests to taste some of the most delicious Sicilian food found anywhere. For a more in-depth tour, visitors will want to take the six-day long Golden Sicily Tour. This tour will allow people to view all of the major sights in Sicily. This tour is complete with hotel lodgings, and some of them include such amenities as jeep excursions, gourmet cooking classes and delicious Sicilian lunches.

Explore the Ancient City of Pompeii:
Until about the year 79AD, Pompeii was a thriving and busy city filled with more than 20,000 Roman inhabitants. It was often a popular vacation destination for many wealthy Romans, and it had many surprisingly modern developments including running water, a swimming pool, a hotel, several restaurants, theaters, a gymnasium and several temples.

Pompeii was buried 18 feet deep with pumice stone and ash after Mount Vesuvius erupted, forcing a 20 foot-high column of smoke and ash from its crater. The day of the eruption, many residents were celebrating the feast day of Vulcan, which is the Roman God of fire. The city remained buried upon many layers of stone, ash and dirt until about 1748, when it was discovered.

Experts preserved the ancient city, and today it is a world heritage site and perhaps one of the most well-known archaeological sites in the whole world. Visitors can take a walk through the ancient village and view such things as many lovely preserved paintings, Roman brothels, ancient temples, exhibition halls, quaint shops and ancient homes of the city’s long-gone residents.

Travel to the Lovely City of Naples:
The city of Naples, located in the Campania region of Southern Italy, is a two hour drive from Rome and sits within the northern edge of the Bay of Naples, one of Europe’s most beautiful bays. For a fabulous day excursion, while visiting Naples, people will want to visit one of the many lovely islands nearby. People can reach these islands by ferry and enjoy the amazing beauty that each one has to offer.

Capri is one of the most popular islands to visit near Naples, and it is most known for its breathtaking beauty, tranquil waters and mild weather. There are many fabulous hotels on the island, and the food here is some of the best Mediterranean food in the world. For people, who choose to stay within Naples, they can take a walk around the city and experience some of the centuries-old monuments of the area such as the 15th century statue of the Egyptian God, Nile or the oldest spire of San Gennaro.

Relax on the Peaceful Island of Sardinia:
Those people, who want to escape the hustle and bustle of Italy’s popular cities, must visit the beautiful and serene island of Sardinia. This destination is perfect for both couples and even families who want to relax and unwind, while enjoying the tranquil beauty of the island. Sardinia is the second largest island of the Mediterranean, offering people plenty of opportunities for exploration.

While on the island, tourists will want to visit one of the area’s three national parks: Gennargentu National Park, Archipelago of La Maddalena’s National Park and Asinara National Park. Here, visitors will be able to see an array of exotic animals and plants that can only be found on Sardinia. The weather on Sardinia is always mild, and it also makes for perfect sailing weather.

There are many fabulous things to see and do in Italy, and Southern Italy is no exception. Every year, thousands upon thousands of people flock to the beautiful country of Italy to experience all it has to offer. Whether people want to explore the ancient city of Pompeii, view the spectacular architecture of Sicily, explore the lovely islands around Naples, or relax on the peaceful island of Sardinia, Southern Italy promises to be one of their most memorable vacations ever.

WATER SPORTS TO ENJOY IN MAURITIUS

Want to get away? If an exotic island paradise surrounded by clear, blue waters sounds like your idea of a perfect vacation, then Mauritius may be for you. Untouched by humans until the Portuguese landed here in the early 16th century, Mauritius was once home to the ill-fated dodo. Modern day Mauritius is a melting pot of Indian, African, French and Chinese cultures. Just as the history and traditions of this island are varied, so too are the opportunities for activities in the warm waters surrounding the island. If you are heading to Mauritius, be sure not to miss the many water sports this island nation has to offer.

Surfing:
The southwest coast of Mauritius is renowned for its fantastic surf. Here you will find the legendary Tamarin Bay and Le Morne Point. Tamarin Bay first became famous in the 1960s among surfers from Australia. These pioneering sun worshipers tried to keep the surfing mecca unspoiled and used the only code word “Santosha” to refer to the location. Tamarin bay has great waves for expert surfers with the possibility of pipeline riding. In addition it offers a number of surfing spots perfect for beginners. Le Morne Point may not have the history of Tamarin Bay but it offers a consistent swell year-round, usually for two to three hours a day. Other locales not to be missed include Balaclava and Pointe-aux-Piments. These spots are located on the northwest coast and are best in the summer months.

Kite Surfing:
Grab a kite and your board and head for one of these locations to enjoy the extreme sport of kite surfing. As with surfing, the southwest coast is the place to go for the best year-round opportunities. Beginning kite surfers can enjoy the wide open spaces and clean breezes of La Prairie/Baie du Cap lagoon. As Le Morne is ideal for kite surfing eleven months a year, beware of the large crowds that gather here on the weekends. The east and southeast coasts also offer good conditions for kite surfing between April and November. The best spots in the east include Belle Marre, Pointe d’Esny, and Blue Bay.

Swimming with the Dolphins:
There are many companies that offer swimming with dolphins as an addition to whale sightseeing in Mauritius. If you sign up for one of these tours, you will board a small to medium-sized boat and go a few kilometers off the coast to a location where dolphins are known to gather. Despite the excitement of swimming with these beautiful creatures, many people believe that these tours take advantage of dolphins and put them in harm’s way. Due to frequent complaints the government of Mauritius is looking into ending dolphin tours.

Beaches:
Flic en Flac on the western side of the island offers one of the longest stretches of beach in Mauritius. However, this is also the most popular beach among locals and can be quite crowded on the weekends. Mon Choisy is another well-known beach on the north side of the island. This beach is home to an array of food vendors and restaurants for those looking to sample local foodstuffs between applications of sunscreen.

Travelers looking for more secluded sands should check out Blue Beach. Blue Beach is less visited by locals and is on the southeastern part of the island. Finally, Pereybere Beach offers ideal swimming conditions. This beach, between Grand Bay and Port Louis, is known for its pristine sands and crystal clear waters.

Whether you want to take it slow and enjoy a lazy swim in warm, blue waters or you are ready for something more extreme like surfing or kite surfing, Mauritius has a water sport for you. Pack your flip-flops, your best swimsuit and your sunscreen and hit the waves of this island paradise.

TRAVEL SAFE – A GUIDE

When you are on vacation, it may mean that you can let your hair down but you also have to keep in mind that this is definitely not a time to let your guard down. Wherever you may be and whatever you may do, it is important that you keep yourself in the safe zone and this is especially critical when you are traveling. Below are a few traveling tips that can help you have peace of mind while enjoying your vacation time.

Make sure to book your hotel or resort way ahead of time. It is best to know all your travel itineraries, destination and lodging details in advance. If it is your first time to travel to that location or you are not familiar with the place, you may want to get detailed descriptions and instructions on how to get there. This is one way of ensuring that you will not get lost midway. Note that the important numbers that you can call in case you miss or lose your way, this is especially true if you are travelling by car. Directions are very, very important and see to it that you have the right map. Also ask about your resort’s security measures beforehand. Choose a hotel that has tight security controls and regulations. Ask about the door locks or about their security personnel. It will make you feel better to know that you are in safe hands during your vacation.

Since you are in a new place, you are more vulnerable to crooks that usually keep an eye on and target unsuspecting tourists. Be very wary of people who may pretend to be hotel personnel. It may very well be a felon in disguise. One thing to remember is to look at their uniforms and IDs. If you are unsure, check with the front desk. Thefts and pickpockets are quite common in hotels and tourist destinations. To fend off the former, you may want to hang around while housekeeping does their job in keeping your room clean. Otherwise, you make sure that your valuables are safely tucked and hidden out of sight; better yet you may want to take them with you. Pickpockets usually work with distractions best. Their moves may include bumping into you, asking for the time, spilling something on you or even tripping in front of you, so be wary.

When traveling, it is advisable that you go with a buddy. This way you have someone to look out for you and vice versa. Most hotels and resorts set up parties for their guests and more often than not, you will have a drink or two. If you should get drunk and wasted, at least you will have someone to carry you back to the hotel room or even watch your back. Drunks are susceptible to theft and date rape. You would not want to be a victim of one or the other. Make sure that your companion is someone you can trust and who can support you when you get wasted. It would defeat the reason if both of you are thrashed and done in.

MONEY SAVING TIPS FOR ONLINE AIRLINE RESERVATION

Airline ticket rates can vary wildly for passengers on the same flight. One person can pay $250 for a seat, while the individual in the next seat may have paid $1000. There are many tactics to help your reservation resemble that of the first passenger, not the latter.

Book your flight as soon as you decide on travel plans. Airlines give discounts for reservations made at least 3 weeks in advance. The best rates often include a Saturday night stay and have travel dates during the work week.

Shop at the many online travel agents to compare the rates of many different airlines. Be sure to check at least 3 different sites, as each may have a different alotment of tickets, and service fees can also vary.

Be flexible about when you travel, since even changing the flight time on the same day can effect the reservation rate. Unpopular early morning or late evening flights tend to have lower rates. Also, try to avoid peak travel season, summer, spring break, and Christmas and New Years. The cheapest fares tend to be found during the off season and at other times when planes are filled below capacity.

If travelling to a large city, Check the fares for any nearby smaller airports, as it might be cheaper to fly into a neighboring city. Remember to allow for other costs when you considering this option, such as rental car or taxi fares. This might also extend travel time.

In some instances, splitting the trip with stopovers my bring savings. However, be sure the savings are large enough to justify the extra trouble of the stopover.

Look into booking your travel plans as a package deal. Sometimes it is possible to save money by reserving a hotel room and a rental car along with the airline ticket. If you are going on a cruise, ask the cruise company if they are affiliated with any airline.  Some credit card companies also have discount agreements with some airlines. The reverse is also true : many airlines have agreements with hotel chains and rental car companies that can save you money on other travel expenses.

When dealing with a live travel agent, ask if this is the best rate that they have available or if there are any specials offering essentially the same itinerary when you are booking your reservation.

Apply any special discount programs for which you are eligible. Students age 16 to 26 are can get special discounts, and seniors may be able to get discounted fares through the AARP.

Belonging to, or travelling with a group, may get you a better deal on airline reservations. If you are a member of a club or service association, check whether they have a travel plan. If travelling with a group, ask for a group discount. Discounts are often available for government, military or corporate employees. Often, airlines will even extend these discounts even for non-business travel.

In the case of large groups, it is sometimes cheaper to charter a plane than reserve individual seats. This may save time as well as money, since the charter airplane will accommodate your schedule, and baggage can be managed for the entire group, with much less chance of loss of luggage.

When you reach check-in at the airport, ask if any special upgrade deals are available.  Sometimes it is possible to upgrade to first class at a nominal fee, and this is definitely worth it on long flights due to the larger seats and extra leg room.

Short breaks and long stays are catered for in hotels and guesthouses in the city centre or on the outskirts. Further, the prices range from the immediately affordable to more expensive and luxurious rooms. If you’re looking for an alternative, then you’ll find that Birmingham has plenty of options ranging from campsites to self-catering accommodation. There are also special packages available, such as the spa break, where you’ll find yourself pampered into luxury.

Meanwhile, The Jam House is a nightclub supported by music maestro Jools Holland, and holds up to 600 people. Alternatively, Rick’s Garden Café & Bar in Birmingham offers you the opportunity to enjoy Mediterranean cuisine under the stars.
